Why stamps matter more than you think?

This is the most important project I have worked on, and it represents everything that I know and want to do moving forward.

I came across loose stamps at the bottom of a box while at work, and decided to keep them. One of them had Spain's dictator Fransisco Franco on it, and another had France's leader during the collaboration with nazi Germany, Philippe Pétain. This made me question how these random objects could hold much more signification than simply paying for shipping.

I went on a deep dive, and came out with a story about how stamps are the ideal carrier of national imagery. They have been used domestically as part of banal nationalism, but also internationally to spread ideology and influence.

You can find the full 20 minute documentary here.

I designed a custom presentation for introducing new characters in the story. I used a cutout of a real stamp as a mask, and a custom made stamp print texture.

The Characters

This timeline shows up a few times during the beginning of the video, to take the viewer through France's different political regimes and their associated stamps. It helps us visualize how stamps are emitted by the government, and carry "hidden" messages.

Timeline Sequence

I had a lot of fun working on this map. I used 3 layers of mapcomps inside GeoLayers 3 to get the coastline, the ocean floor and the terrain on the continent. I also used a halftone texture inside the land.

The Maps

These are a few of the sequences that appear in the video.
